Movie Review
Thunivu is an action thriller built on a bank robbery plot. It is not based on a true story but the crux and the social messages delivered in the film were adapted from real-life situations and incidents. After a mixed response for Valimai, H. Vinod is back with a bang with his hallmark direction but the spark that lit the fire in Theeran and Sadhuranga Vettai was still missing in Thunivu.
Ajith Kumar will perform to his best ability for the negative shade roles. Vaali, Billa, and Mankatha will remain one of his careers best. Now, Thunivu will also add to that list but with a score of just below exemplar. His screen presence throughout the film is incredible. We can see the shades of Mankatha on screen and the way he delivers the witty one-liners was awestruck. The new stylish look with a long white beard suited well for the gangster role.
Manju Warrier fits the bill as a gangster lady but her relationship with AK was not established from the beginning. A couple of wow factors are built around her stunt performance and she delivered her best to the role. Samuthrakani and Mohana Sundaram performed well as supporting artists. Also, there are a bunch of YouTubers and TikTok makers in the film but their presence did not bring any additional value to the film. Pavni and Amir’s cameo performances in the second half are a force-fit content to the script.
Director H. Vinod strikes the right cords this time and manages to expel the bad memories of Valimai. Right from the first scene till the last frame, AK’s performance was brilliant and the Director exploited the full potential of AK and executed it well on the big screen in grand style. In terms of scriptwriting, Thunivu is far better than Valimai. The detailing of financial crimes was set up and built well in the beginning for the audience to get used to the banking terminology. However, AK’s back story and his relationship with Manju Warrier and the team were not well established in the script. Hence, there is no emotional connection with the characters, and their motive for the robbery is not known to the audience.
The lack of emotional value in the film is a big drawback. The audience may not connect well with the core characters of the film. The rationale behind the motive for the bank robbery is not justified to the audience. For instance, killing government officials, commandos, and policemen for saving poor people from the money-sucking bank and corporates doesn’t make any sense and there is no logic whatsoever for countless gunshot killings. Agree, we can’t expect a logical sense in a big star commercial flick but it was a little overdone in the end and it does look atrocious after a nonstop gunfight in the climax.
Ghibran’s music composition and background score seem to be flat and ineffective for the racy thriller. The songs are not up to the mark and are not in sync with the screenplay. Vijay Velukutty’s editing is fairly decent, and the cuts are racy and captivating but there are a few continuity issues in the second half. Cinematography by Nirav Shah aids the director to exhibit his vision in a grandeur fashion. Production design looked very ordinary for a high-budget film but Nirav Shah managed to conceal the flaws with his brilliant cinematography.
